@Jen: I'm not so sure about the public transport reliability in Melbourne, to be honest, but Melbourne's trains are definitely a lot cleaner than Sydney's.

Melbourne and Sydney are much of a muchness, really. I hear a lot about Sydney having better beaches, but I'm not a very beach-y person myself. Also, Sydney has a nice harbour while Melbourne has a heavily-polluted river.

Melbourne is also apparently the arts/culture/food/shopping/sport capital, which I guess could be true at least for some of those, but I don't experience much of it.

Melbourne has a lot of hidden laneways, especially in the CBD, with all sorts of secrets and eateries in them, which is potentially troublesome for tourists. I don't believe this is as prominent in Sydney.

Anyway, I haven't explored Sydney enough to be very informative, so I'll be a typical Melburnian and say "Melbourne > Sydney".

Seeing photos of Melbourne makes me want to drag my friends down there for a roadtrip. It's really just a change of scenery, and more reliable transport (!), but really, how does Melbourne compare to Sydney?
